Bordj Moussa Museum

Housed in a 16th-century Spanish fort, Bordj Moussa Museum brings together the history of Béjaïa and archaeological and art collections. The building, which also served as a barracks and a prison, is an integral part of the visit: it reveals the successive transformations of a Mediterranean stronghold into a place of preservation.

From fort to museum

The monument changed its function and name under successive occupying powers. Used during the Ottoman period, it passed into French hands in 1833 and was renamed Fort Barral. The cultural heritage map dates its designation for museum use to 1987, while visitor guides give 1989 as the year it began operating as a museum. These two dates therefore refer to different stages of its conversion.

The historic spaces have not disappeared behind the display cases. The Petit Futé guide mentions, in particular, a reading room created in a vaulted cistern: an example of adaptive reuse that encourages visitors to pay as much attention to the fort’s spaces and functions as to the objects on display.

Archaeology and painting

The collections bring together prehistoric remains, including finds from Ali Bacha Cave, as well as evidence from the Roman and Hafsid periods. They place Béjaïa within a history that long predates the Spanish fortress. Natural history collections, notably birds and insects from Africa, also feature in the museum’s description.

Painting offers another way to explore the region. Works by Émile Aubry evoke Kabyle landscapes and the region’s inhabitants in the early 20th century. The collection described also includes contemporary Algerian painters, among them Tabekouch and Farès. This diversity sets Bordj Moussa apart from a purely military museum: its displays bring the city’s material remains and natural surroundings into dialogue with artists’ perspectives on Kabylia.
