Ifri-Ouzellaguen Museum is inseparable from the place where the Soummam Congress was held in August 1956. Alongside the museum’s documentary role is its significance as a historic site: the congress house, memorial and gathering spaces give a tangible presence to this major episode in the War of Independence.
A journey through remembrance
Inaugurated in August 1984, the complex traces resistance to colonisation and the War of Liberation. It covers, in particular, the 1871 uprising associated with El Mokrani and Sheikh Belhaddad, before turning to the people and events of the struggle for independence. Portraits and documents allow visitors to follow individual lives within this shared history.
The report on the museum also describes weapons and personal belongings, including a ceremonial outfit belonging to Colonel Amirouche. These objects complement the texts and photographs, reminding visitors that the historical figures discussed left material traces that need to be preserved and placed in context.
The congress house and the memorial
Several buildings house the exhibition galleries, a library and a screening room around a large square. At the western entrance stand statues of six congress participants: Lakhdar Bentobbal, Zighoud Youcef, Abane Ramdane, Amar Ouamrane, Krim Belkacem and Larbi Ben M’hidi.
The small house that hosted the meeting remains the highlight of the site. Set on higher ground, it is connected to the commemorative spaces by a forecourt and amphitheatre-style seating. A visit is most rewarding when these two dimensions are considered together: the collections explain the movement’s organisation and key figures, while the congress venue helps visitors understand its setting within the villages of Ouzellaguen.
