Laghouat Moudjahid Museum

In central Laghouat, the Moudjahid Museum preserves the memory of resistance movements and the War of Liberation in a building that served as a prison during the colonial period. The history of the site gives particular weight to the documents and images: the place of detention itself becomes a means of passing on that history.

A former place of detention

The press article about the museum states that the former prison included an administrative section, cells and a room used for torture and interrogation. The visitor experience therefore extends beyond display cases: the preserved spaces allow testimonies to be placed in their physical setting.

The museum was established in 2003. Initially affiliated with the national museum, it later came under the regional museum in Biskra, according to the published account of its history. These milestones concern the institution’s organisation; they do not alter its location in Laghouat or its role as a local place of remembrance.

Images, documents and testimonies

The collection presented includes photographs, historical documents, testimonies and models. Brought together in the hall and former cells, they recount the struggle for independence and the violence of the colonial period. The museum welcomes school groups in particular, as well as visitors interested in regional history.

Commemorations are marked by exhibitions and gatherings. In August 2023, a celebration of Moudjahid Day was announced at the museum, with a photographic exhibition and tributes. This example demonstrates its public engagement work but does not constitute a permanent programme. For a guided visit or documentary research, it is useful to clarify visiting arrangements and which holdings are available for consultation.
