Presidency announces Boualem Boualem's death

According to a Presidency announcement reported by TSA, its chief of staff, Boualem Boualem, died on 5 October in a Geneva hospital. He had been appointed to the post in November 2023 after serving as a presidential adviser whose responsibilities included legal affairs.

Noureddine Haddad takes command of the 1st Military Region

Major General Noureddine Haddad was installed as commander of the 1st Military Region on 5 October, replacing Major General Ali Sidane. According to the Defence Ministry statement cited by Radio Algérienne, Saïd Chanegriha presided over the ceremony on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Energy partnership talks in Oran

At NAPEC 2026 in Oran on 5 October, Mohamed Arkab met representatives of Thailand's PTTEP, Oman's OQ and Petrogas, and the American company Occidental Petroleum. Talks covered cooperation with Sonatrach, including exploration, production, liquefied natural gas and petrochemicals. The PTTEP meeting also reviewed existing cooperation at Hassi Bir Rekaiz. The account describes discussions and potential partnerships, rather than announcing newly signed contracts.

Two Algerian–Spanish agreements on red meat

Two agreements were signed in Algiers on 5 October: one between ALVIAR and the Spanish organisations INTEROVIC and PROVACUNO, and another between those organisations and Algeria's national union of red-meat importers. ALVIAR's framework agreement aims to share expertise, improve livestock breeds and develop logistics cooperation. Abattoir modernisation and livestock development are prospects for the partnership, not projects reported as already completed.

School holidays and term exams for 2026–2027

The Education Ministry unveiled the 2026–2027 school calendar on 5 October, TSA reports. Primary-school first-term exams are scheduled for 6–10 December 2026. Autumn holidays run from 27 October to 2 November 2026, and winter holidays from 17 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Spring holidays are set for 18 March–4 April 2027. The exams mentioned here are term assessments, not the national BEM or baccalaureate examinations.

Pharmacy measures still awaiting official publication

In Algiers on 5 October, the Health Minister announced texts covering the prescribing and dispensing of medicines and supplements intended for human use. He said they had received Council of Ministers approval, but Official Journal publication procedures were still under way. The supplements text would reserve dispensing to pharmacists. The minister also announced a national health-services map that would include pharmacies and medical-testing laboratories.

Assia Djebar prize ceremony scheduled for 8 October

The ceremony for the 8th Assia Djebar novel prize is scheduled for 8 October at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers. Announced on 14 September, the shortlist comprises 9 novels, equally divided between Arabic, Tamazight and French, from 155 submissions. Miloud Hakim chairs the jury. The forthcoming event is the prize-giving ceremony; this announcement does not yet name the winners.

The route planned for the Algiers cycling Grand Prix

The Algiers cycling Grand Prix programme includes a 134.52 km second stage from Bab El Oued to Zeralda via Tipasa. The stage race is scheduled for 5–7 October, ending with a circuit stage in Sidi Abdallah. The capital's closing classic is planned for 9 October. Radio Algérienne lists 20 teams from 15 countries for the wider event. These are programme details, not race results.
