Sétif National Public Museum of Archaeology

Sétif National Public Museum of Archaeology presents the history of the city and its region, from prehistory to the medieval periods. Its collections are divided into five main groups: prehistory, antiquity, the Islamic period, coins and mosaics.

From the earliest settlements to Sitifis

The prehistoric displays include fossils and tools, notably from Aïn Hanech, as well as objects associated with the Capsian culture of Mezloug. These objects place the history of Sétif within a timespan that begins long before the Roman city.

The antiquities section brings together ceramics, oil lamps, glassware, bronzes, stelae and inscriptions. The vessels offer insights into the preparation, serving and storage of food, while the stelae and altars document religious and funerary practices in Sitifis and the surrounding area.

Islamic art, coins and mosaics

The Islamic collections include Fatimid and Hammadid ceramics, carved marble elements and painted stucco. The coin collection offers another perspective, with ancient coins and gold and silver pieces from the Islamic periods.

Mosaics are one of the museum’s strengths. The ministry singles out the Triumphal Return of Bacchus and the Toilet of Venus, alongside geometric, floral, animal and epigraphic designs. The present institution continues a local museum tradition that began with a museum of stone artefacts in 1896; its designation as a national museum dates from 1992. The telephone number published by the ministry is a museum contact, distinct from the wilaya’s general contact details.
