In Azouza, in the municipality of Larbaâ Nath Irathen, Abane Ramdane’s house has become a museum dedicated to one of the principal political organisers of the Algerian Revolution. The site’s interest lies as much in the family home as in the documents that place his life and work within the history of the War of Independence.
A restored house
Built in 1924, the house suffered damage, notably during a bombing in 1958. Its restoration preserved its traditional layout. The museum’s inauguration in 2010 marked its transition from a house associated with a family’s history to a place where that history could be shared with the public. The building is listed on the Algerian cultural heritage map, which also offers a virtual tour.
A political career in the context of the Revolution
The exhibitions devoted to Abane form part of the work to preserve historical memory undertaken by the Regional Museum of the Algerian Liberation Struggle in Tizi Ouzou. In January 2019, that museum announced a permanent exhibition in the house in Azouza and in Krim Belkacem’s house in Tizra n’Aïssa. These two sites present complementary accounts, exploring the political organisation of the struggle, military involvement and the decisions that led to independence.
A separate stop from Tizi Ouzou
The museum is in the village of Azouza, also transcribed as Iâzouzen in the press, rather than in the provincial capital. This is an important distinction when planning your journey. A visit can be understood as an encounter between Kabyle domestic architecture and national memory; the documents should be considered in relation to the house, rather than as a mere succession of portraits.
