Algiers and Madrid prepare an October high-level meeting

Widespread orange heat vigilance continues into Tuesday
The National Meteorological Office’s latest official update showed 42 wilayas at orange level and seven at yellow, with none at red. Severe heat remains the main hazard across a broad area through 21 July. Some eastern locations also face shorter periods of rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon. The hazards and expiry times are not uniform, so a national count should not be turned into a claim that every orange wilaya is experiencing the same conditions.
Orange vigilance calls for serious care but is distinct from the highest red level. People can reduce exposure during the hottest hours, drink water regularly and check on older relatives, children and anyone with a chronic condition. Where storms develop, open ground, exposed ridges and watercourses can become unsafe. Algiers Metro extends Friday and Saturday service to midnight
The Algiers Metro operating company has introduced an exceptional summer timetable for Fridays and Saturdays. Last trains are scheduled to depart at midnight on those two days, responding to heavier evening movement and seasonal activities in the capital. The measure is limited to the metro system. It does not automatically alter tram, bus or intercity services, and it should not be described as a midnight timetable for every night of the week.
The announcement does not provide a fixed end date for the summer arrangement. Midnight refers to the final departure in the operating plan, not a promise that a train will leave every station at precisely that time. Passengers making a late journey should still check station information, direction of travel and the availability of onward connections. Sonatrach and VNG sign a new gas supply contract
German energy company VNG says it has signed a new natural-gas supply contract with Sonatrach, with Algerian deliveries expected to begin from 2027. VNG has imported Algerian gas since 2024, so the agreement continues an existing commercial relationship and adds to the company’s supply diversification. For Sonatrach, it confirms another European customer, although the public announcement does not quantify the amount of gas covered by the contract.
Volume, price, total value and duration remain undisclosed. The phrase “from 2027” does not support an exact 1 January starting date. The supply contract must also be kept separate from a June memorandum concerning possible green-hydrogen supply-chain work and cooperation on methane emissions. Those subjects are exploratory and do not establish an operating hydrogen corridor, a funded construction programme or an additional binding gas commitment beyond what the new contract itself states.
New baccalaureate holders can adjust choices through 22 July
Algeria’s 2026 university orientation process is in its confirmation and modification stage from 20 to 22 July. A senior Higher Education Ministry official said orientation results are scheduled for 30 July. The wider process is online and allows new baccalaureate holders to submit 12 choices. Confirming a list records the student’s preferences within the process; it does not guarantee placement in the first choice or constitute an orientation result.
A second preference period is planned for 31 July to 2 August for candidates who need another submission, with results scheduled for 5 August. On 21 July the immediate task is to review the existing preference list before the next day’s deadline. US Embassy announces an FBI legal-attaché sub-office
The US Embassy in Algiers has announced a sub-office of the FBI legal attaché, commonly described as LEGAT, within the embassy. Legal-attaché offices coordinate with foreign police and justice partners when investigations have an international dimension. The embassy presented the move as a step in Algeria–US law-enforcement cooperation. It is a liaison arrangement inside a diplomatic mission, not a separate police service operating above Algerian institutions.
