In the heart of the El Mechouar citadel, the Algerian Traditional Costume Interpretation Centre introduces visitors to the festive clothing, adornments and craftsmanship associated with major ceremonies. The Zayyanid royal palace and exhibition rooms offer an opportunity to explore architecture and clothing heritage together.
Three perspectives on costume
The ‘Lebset El Arftane’ room presents outfits sewn and embroidered by Tlemcen’s craftspeople. The collection offers a close look at the treatment of fabrics, embellishments and construction techniques: behind each ceremonial outfit lie several crafts and skills passed down through generations.
The vaulted room broadens the view to different Algerian provinces. Ceremonial costumes are brought together to highlight regional characteristics, rather than impose the idea of a single national costume. The space devoted to the blousa, set in the courtyard of the Zayyanid princesses, explores the history and embellishments of this garment.
The palace and the centre’s activities
The royal palace was restored and remodelled as part of the Tlemcen, Capital of Islamic Culture event in 2011. The centre describes permanent exhibition spaces, a room for temporary exhibitions, a library and an open-air theatre. A presentation of the diwan depicts the Zayyanid king and his guards; it complements the exploration of costume but should not be confused with an archaeological collection.
The website offers an online tour of the rooms. This can help you prepare for a visit to El Mechouar, particularly by familiarising yourself with garment shapes and decorative techniques. For group visits, temporary exhibitions or accessibility requirements, contact the centre to check which spaces are open and what assistance is available.
