Ahmed Zabana National Museum

At 19 avenue Ahmed-Zabana, Oran's national museum brings together several fields of heritage: archaeology, natural history, ethnography and fine art. Its varied collections make it a place both to understand the city and to discover objects from different periods.

Collections assembled since the 19th century

The Ministry of Culture dates the museum's foundation to 1879, at the initiative of the Geography and Archaeology Society of the Province of Oran. Louis Demaeght played a part in bringing together objects that had previously been scattered. The earliest collections included coins, antiquities and fossils, before expanding into other fields.

The Palace of Fine Arts

The current premises, on avenue Ahmed-Zabana, opened in 1935 in the Palace of Fine Arts. The institution later took the name of Ahmed Zabana. Its transition from a museum founded by a learned society to a national museum forms part of its history, without erasing the varied origins of its collections.

Choosing your route

The Oran guide describes galleries devoted to natural history, prehistory, antiquity, Islamic archaeology, ethnography and old Oran, as well as fine art. This variety makes it worth choosing a few collections according to your interests. Archaeological objects and material relating to the city's history can be particularly rewarding to explore together.

Planning your visit
