Nasreddine Dinet National Public Museum

The Nasreddine Dinet Museum is in the heart of Bou Saâda, in the El Mouamine neighbourhood. Dedicated to the painter’s memory, it brings together a place where he lived and worked with exhibition rooms: a way of exploring Étienne Dinet’s attachment to the town without entirely separating his works from their surroundings.

The studio and the museum

Dinet first came to Algeria in 1884 and settled in Bou Saâda in the early twentieth century. He chose a house in the old town and found some of his models among the neighbourhood’s residents. A museum in his memory was first envisaged in 1969, but the institution was not established until 1993; its website dates the inauguration to 18 May that year.

The museum includes an older section, which housed the painter’s studio and has been restored, as well as an extension built in 1993 with two exhibition rooms. This arrangement distinguishes the spaces associated with the artist from those designed to conserve and display the collections.

Discovering a collection beyond its namesake

The ministry’s entry mentions, among other works, Dinet’s Portrait of a Man and Eugène Verschaffelt’s Interior in Bou Saâda, as well as books, visitors’ books and a Legion of Honour medallion that belonged to Dinet. These are examples from the documented collection, not a promise that each piece is on permanent display.

The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and activities centred on painting. Its recent publications feature discussions of artworks and sessions for children. It is therefore useful to contact the museum directly when planning a visit: exploring the former studio may be complemented by an exhibition or activity, with a programme that varies.
