Boulaâziz Martyr Brothers National Public Museum

Khenchela’s national public museum is named after the Boulaâziz Martyr Brothers. It preserves the region’s archaeological heritage and should not be confused with the Moudjahid Museum, which is devoted to the history of the struggle for independence.

Remains from several periods

A 2019 report describes Byzantine bronze coins, Ottoman silver coins, a Roman jug and stones bearing Latin inscriptions among the recovered items. These examples illustrate the diversity of the museum’s holdings, without implying that every object is on permanent display.

Documents about the museum emphasise the importance of conserving objects from the region. An article dated 7 January 2026 describes, in particular, a proposed archaeological garden intended to display votive and funerary stelae, decorative panels and architectural elements. The planned groups of objects relate to the Numidian, Roman and Late Roman periods.

These categories of objects offer different perspectives: the stelae shed light on funerary or religious practices, while the architectural fragments bear witness to buildings and their decoration. The project aims to give greater visibility to objects that are not necessarily suited to presentation in a display case.

A garden announced, not a confirmed opening

The cultural official quoted in January 2026 explains that a substantial proportion of the objects intended for the garden were recovered through efforts to combat antiquities trafficking. The museum therefore plays a role in conservation as well as in public display.

The article announces that the garden will open soon; it does not report its inauguration. This entry therefore does not present the project as a space that is currently accessible. The contact details published on the cultural map can be used to ask the museum which spaces, indoors or outdoors, are actually open at the time of a visit.
