Djemila Site Museum

Djemila Museum brings together finds from the ancient city, with a strong emphasis on mosaics. It complements a visit to the site by presenting decorative work, sculptures and objects that can no longer be fully understood from the ruins alone.

A museum developed alongside the excavations

The official cultural listing dates its foundation to 1910, at the beginning of the 20th-century excavation campaigns. It describes four rooms, fitted out gradually to accommodate the finds. The museum’s history thus goes hand in hand with the exploration of the site and the conservation of the objects unearthed.

The first rooms combine mosaics displayed on the walls and floor, marble statues and display cases containing ancient objects. Coins also feature in the description of the collections. Together, these displays take visitors from large-scale decorative work to smaller objects.

Looking at the subjects as well as the tesserae

The scenes cited include the marriage of Amphitrite and Neptune, the abduction of Europa and Bacchus. The documentation also mentions mosaics associated with a Christian building, a reminder that the displays are not confined to a single mythological theme.

The fourth room, described as open at the front and roofed with glass, brings together sculptural finds, including portraits of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. To help visitors plan their visit, the museum has a telephone number and email address published on the cultural map. These can be used to enquire about access to the rooms, which is separate from the opportunity simply to walk around the site.
