In Hamma, the National Museum of Fine Arts overlooks the Jardin d’Essai botanical garden and the Bay of Algiers. Built from 1927 onwards on a wooded hill, it brings together paintings, sculptures and decorative arts in a building whose architecture is an integral part of the visit.
The building and its gardens
The tourism directorate attributes its design to Paul Guion and describes Art Deco architecture combining several decorative influences. A pergola, hanging gardens and a panoramic terrace shape the relationship between the galleries and the landscape. The museum belongs to a group of heritage sites in Hamma that also includes Villa Abd-el-Tif and the Cervantes Cave.
Exploring the collections in stages
The collection includes paintings, drawings, engravings and prints, as well as sculptures, antique furniture, ceramics and glassware. The museum’s historical overview describes a display spanning several centuries of European art, with a strong emphasis on the 19th century and works inspired by Algeria.
The Bronze Gallery is particularly associated with Bourdelle’s Hercules the Archer. Works by the first generations of Algerian painters also feature in the collections, including those of Bachir Yellès and M’hamed Issiakhem. The displays are therefore not limited to European painting or to a single period.
Planning your visit
For a first visit, focus on the collections that interest you, then explore the architectural spaces that are accessible. The museum’s older website mentions building work in certain parts of the premises: ask which floors and galleries are open, rather than treating this earlier description as a current account of access.
