Bardo National Public Museum

In the hills above Algiers, the Bardo combines the discovery of a former summer residence with a museum of prehistory and ethnography. The house, probably built in the 18th century, provides a different setting for a visit from that of a purpose-built gallery.

A house turned museum

The cultural heritage map traces the villa’s changes of ownership in the 19th century. It mentions, in particular, the alterations made by Ali Bey, who embellished it with frescoes and glazed earthenware tiles, followed by extensions built by Pierre Joret. The suggestion that a Tunisian prince built it remains a hypothesis rather than an established fact.

The museum opened in 1930. Other buildings were gradually added to the house to accommodate administration, collection storage and research. The villa’s designation as a historic monument and the museum’s national status both date from 1985.

Prehistory, ethnography and architecture

The collections include Palaeolithic and Neolithic assemblages, rock engravings and grave goods. The ethnographic holdings described in the cultural map include musical instruments, embroidered costumes, copper and brassware, silver jewellery, pottery and woven textiles. These objects offer opportunities to compare materials, techniques and uses. They are held by the museum, but are not necessarily all on display at the same time.

Planning your visit

The museum is in the Upper Mustapha area, near the upper end of Boulevard Didouche Mourad. Before travelling, confirm which spaces are actually accessible and what arrangements apply to visits; the inclusion of collections in an inventory does not guarantee that they are on permanent display.
