National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions

In the lower Casbah, the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions occupies Dar Khédaoudj El Amia. A visit combines collections of Algerian crafts with the chance to explore a historic house in the Souk el Djemaa neighbourhood, once associated with a Friday market.

Distinguishing history from legend

The museum presents two theories about the palace’s origins: a building dating from around 1570, attributed to Yahia Raïs, or a residence built in the 18th century for Khédaoudj. The story of the princess who went blind from constantly admiring her own beauty, however, belongs to Algiers folklore. These accounts should not be confused with a definitively established date.

After serving several purposes in the 19th century, the house became home to a technical crafts service in 1947, with a permanent exhibition of popular arts. It became a museum in 1961, then a national museum in 1987. This sequence explains the close link between the building and the preservation of craft skills.

Objects and practices

The tourism directorate mentions collections of carpets, pottery and ceramics. These offer a way to approach craftsmanship through materials, techniques and uses, rather than simply as decoration. The institution also describes its work in conservation, documentation and educational activities with schools.

In the lower Casbah

The museum is listed at 9, rue Mohamed Akli Malek. Plan your visit as an exploration of a historic house as much as a collection: observe the arrangement of the spaces as well as the objects on display. Confirm exhibitions, workshops and arrangements for group visits directly with the museum.
