The Prophet (SAW) liked to laugh, one of the sahaba was known for playing practical jokes, and as a joke, told some men that Abu Bakir As-Sadeeq (RA) was his slave and that he was for sale. They agreed on a price, and he told the buyer to be careful because his slave liked to tell people that he was a free man - but really he was a slave.
So they went Abu Bakir As-Sadeeq (RA) and told him he had been bought, when he tried to explain to them that he was free, they told him they knew about his habit of telling his owners he was free and to just follow them.

They eventually realised they had been 'set up'. I think the sahabi spent the gold, so the sahaba had to reimburse the buyer from their own pocket.

The Prophet (SAW) said: For a year every time I remembered that story I laughed.

His laugh wasn't a laugh, more of a smile - anyway that was the point.

Once the same man famous for his practical jokes was found drunk, he was taken to the Prophet (SAW) and the sahaba asked that he be publicly punished for being drunk. The Prophet (SAW) said: All I know about this man is that he loves Allah (SWT) and His Messenger (SAW). The man was not punished for being drunk.

The Prophet (SAW) always tried to find excuses for people, and did not want them to be punished. the only time people were punished was when they confessed and asked to be punished and even then, the Prophet (SAW) would turn away from them on more than one occasion.

Love of the Prophet (SAW) is the key to Jannah Inshallah.
